Smoking is an addiction. Despite its harmful effects,
smoking has become a passion for millions of people
worldwide. Because of its health hazards, smoking
should be limited in some places and banned in others.
In the United States, which is a democracy, smokers
should have the right to smoke and non-smokers should
have the right to breathe air that is not full of
second-hand smoke. For some people, smoking is a means
of enjoyment which relaxes them and helps them deal
with stress. Although some find positive reasons to
smoke, it is still a dangerous habit. Smoking has
harmful physical effects such as lung disorders; in
severe cases it results in lung cancer and death. In
addition to the physically harmful effects, smoking
also causes a lot of disputes between smokers and
non-smokers.
Smoking should definitely be banned in public places
because smoke rises when someone lights up a
cigarette. This smoke is more hazardous to the
nonsmoker who passively inhales the smoke than to the
smoker. The reason for this is that the nonsmoker has
to inhale unfiltered smoke thereby causing more ill
effects than the smoker‘s filtered smoke. Several
pulmonary diseases such as coughs, bronchitis, asthma,
emphysema, and last, but not the least, carcinoma of
the lungs may occur as a consequence of smoking. Smoke
causes bad smelling breath, clothes, and hair. Because
smoking constricts blood vessels, it can prevent
oxygen from getting to the skin which is why smokers
often appear pale and unhealthy. Smoking also affects
the body's immune system which is why smokers heal
more slowly than non-smokers. Also, smokers get more
colds and flu than non-smokers. Worst of all, smoking
harms nearly every organ of the body, reducing health
while.
