Technology is part of everyday life. Students use everything from mobile phones, to personal computers, to the Internet to assist with their studying. These technological advances also have a downfall; they have made it easier for dishonest students to cheat. Gone are the days of passing notes, leaving answer sheets uncovered to assist a friend in obtaining correct answers. Students these days use a variety of methods to cheat in school, including using the Internet, to purchase term papers, plagiarism, utilizing mobile devices, as well as hacking into school systems to alter results and obtain test information.
The Internet
Using the Internet to cheat is not a new concept to high school or college students; in fact it is a growing problem for teachers. Sources found using the World Wide Web that can either provide a wealth of information, or assist in the cheating process. Although new forms of technology that colleges and professors can access to mirror what has been written to what is online, it is still a losing battle. Brand new databases designed to fight back against the growing dilemma will locate similar 6 string words and phrases (Fox, 2001, P.10). Numerous investigations have been conducted at colleges across the country which has led to multiple expulsions but that still does not deter cheating. Some blame the teachers for not taking time to make sure every student fully comprehends the assignment and then some think that the student is just proving that they are just plain lazy. Technology such as PDA cell phones now let a student access the Internet for answers and ideas all while they are in the classroom. In the middle of a test a cell phone can download graphs, solutions to problems or just the answer.
Some ways that a student can cheat using the internet is cutting and pasting paragraphs, changing verbiage to make it one’s own, submitting old papers, research others citations and purchasing another’s work online. This...
