According to Freeman and Medway (1), a genre is a method of discourse which serves as a response to a recurring social situation. In many communities of discourse that exist today, many genres focus on the realm of science and medicine. These genres are often given great attention, because they reflect upon our values of health. Often, genres in the field of science and medicine provide us with information about the causes of a condition, as well as possible treatments for various conditions. This information is usually communicated within the scientific community in the form of journal articles. Later, this information is relayed to the general public in the form of popular sources, which may include magazines and newspaper articles. Each genre uses various methods and degrees of persuasion, which relate to the purpose of the genre and the social context of the topic being discussed. One condition which is widely discussed in various genres is type two diabetes, which is a disease characterized by insulin deficiency or improper use of insulin by the body. It has been suggested through numerous scientific studies that a healthy and active lifestyle can prevent and manage type two diabetes. As a result, various genres related to type two diabetes discuss the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. On the basis of their rhetorical purposes, various genres related to type two diabetes persuade readers, in varying degrees and methods, that an active and healthy lifestyle is the best way to prevent and manage diabetes.
First of all, in scientific articles, there is very little encouragement for readers to pursue healthy and active lifestyles. This is clearly evident in a scientific journal article written by Haffner et al. (283), which discuses the incidence of type two diabetes in Mexican Americans in relation to fasting insulin and glucose levels, obesity, and body fat distribution.
