What is a tragic hero? A tragic hero is the main character of a tragedy. Traditionally, a fault or weakness in character that causes the hero’s downfall. In the play Othello and the movie O, viewers and readers can make the assumption that Othello is one of the most tragic plays Shakespeare has ever written. Othello has a lot of characteristics that is more tragic than Shakespeare other plays. Therefore you can say that Othello is the tragic hero, in the movie O and the play Othello. Othello shows his downfalls by various differences in archetypes, storylines, scenes, and settings. His tragic flaw, one that is common in tragedies, would be that of loving an individal who is different to the plots and motives of others.
The different archetypes that Othello, the tragic hero reveals are a faithful companion, a hero, a rebel, and an outsider. Othello shows faithful companion traits in the play because of how he stayed true to his city and his companions. In the movie Odin shows faithful companion traits in the movie by staying true to his basketball team and staying true to his friends. He posses hero qualities in the play by being a devoted military leader. In the movie Odin shows hero qualities by being the star of the basketball team and always leading them to victory. Both Odin and Othello posses rebel traits because both didn’t care about what others thought they still kept their love for Desdemona no matter what others said. Also, both Odin and Othello posses an outsider qualities because of the way people treated them because of the color of their skin.
Othello in the play is a young man who has a gentleman personality but also virtues of a military leader. He has a lot of experience in the battle area. In both the play and the movie Othello has shown that he is dependable and well respected. His courageous personality, is what attract people to him, such as Desdemona.
