“ Aria: Memoir of a bilingual childhood” maybe a good first hand look and perspective of past bilingual education programs and the isolation of students in those programs. But times have changed and so have the ways of going about those students education. Regardless of the events of Mr. Rodriguez’ experienced in bilingual programs times have changed, laws have been made and education has become a priority for every learner in the Untied States no matter their primary language or social status.
Race does not effect advantages or disadvantages socially. Things have changed not only in education but in this country as a whole. Rodriguez places a scarlet letter on the bilingual community when many people groups are socially disadvantaged because of their background Because of these children’s first language and home language may differ from the ideal American home, this is no longer an instance where they are separated and looked upon as a reason to quarantine, rather to desegregate and better social skills because of new agenda and law. The new outlook on bi-cultural education rejects the symbol pf America as a melting pot that erases differences. Instead, it emphasizes a students right to get an education by adding to his or her home language, not subtracting it form a child’s life
Languages other than English are a resource not a problem. Before change, to many people children speaking languages other than English was looked upon as a problem. Now languages other than English are a resource. In present programs use of first languages are not discouraged. Two-way programs where Spanish speaking and other languages fluent speakers are mixed with English speakers and the two groups are used as a resource for each other and creates a bond and connects the two groups under a common goal.
