In the essay “I Want A Wife”, by Judy Brady it is evident that Brady has some sort of anger toward the male gender and how men treated women. The essay was published in the first issue of Ms. magazine, which was one of the many female magazines during the feminist movement. Brady was a strong believer in women’s rights. She felt that men have all their necessities in life handed to them on a silver platter from their wives. During the time of the movement women’s roles were only the homemaker and doing whatever they could do to make their husband’s life easier. In the essay Brady turns the tables and says “I, too, would like a wife” (Brady 241). She states how she would love for someone to do all the work around the house and be a caregiver to the family. She says also, “I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs”, basically saying it’s a woman’s job to do anything and everything for a man. The men come and go as they please while the wives slave at home taking care of the house and its up-keeping, cooking, and not only taking care of the children’s wants and needs but their husbands too. It is unfair that a woman has so much pressure as a wife. Marriage is something that is supposed to make both people in the relationship happy. If women are doing all the work and the men sit back and relax and give orders then the only person benefitting from the marriage is the man. Everyone would love to have someone that will do everything for them, but that’s just not the reality of life. Brady’s sole purpose of this essay was to state how unfair the circumstances were back then and let it be known to women they deserve better.
