Uncle Sam wants you, Women
The image of a female dressed in army fatigues and carrying an assault weapon is not one that most people like to consider, and though this may not be the typical attire of an American woman, it is becoming more acceptable and more of a reality. The opportunity now given to women to serve in the military was no small feat. It has been made possible through legislation as well as determination from many people, but even though women have shown tremendous advancement, they are restricted from participating in certain duties in the military. Unfortunately, many people feel that women should not be allowed to serve in the military. They tend to believe that females are emotionally unstable and physically unable. Other concerns regarding women in the military include pregnancy, sexual harassment, and family obligations. I pose this question: if a woman is willing to leave her home and family, carry out vigorous tasks, and die for her country, then why not let her serve? Women should be allowed to fight in combat to strengthen America’s defense system because service should be based on ability and training, not gender.
When the men of the United States went to war against Germany in World War I, women went to work. This “Great War” changed the role women played in society. Traditionally, women had been caretakers of the home: cleaning, cooking, and rearing the children. However, while the men were fighting in Europe, the women went to work in factories or anywhere else they could find employment were needed in order to support their families and the war effort. Since that time, women have earned the right to vote, have become CEOs of major companies, and have joined all branches of the military. I applaud these opportunities that women have been given over the last few decades, but I am convinced that women have always possessed the potential to do their part in protecting and serving our country.
