The Atomic Mass of Candium Lab Mrs. Shepard

I. Purpose- The main objective of this lab was to analyze the isotopes of the element “candium” and to calculate its atomic mass.

II. Materials-

A) Sample of candium
B) Balance
C) Container for candium
D) Pencil
E) Paper

III. Procedure-
1. Obtain a sample of candium that contains three different brands of round, coated candy.
2. Treat each brand of candy as an isotope of candium and separate the three isotopes into groups labeled A, B, and C.
3. Measure and record the mass of each isotope using the balance.
4. Count and record the number of atoms in each sample.
5. Calculate the average mass of each isotope by dividing its total mass by the number of particles of that isotope.
6. Calculate the relative abundance of each isotope by dividing its number of particles by the total number of particles.
7. Calculate the percent abundance of each isotope by multiplying the relative abundance by one hundred.
8. Calculate the relative mass of each isotope by multiplying its relative abundance by its average mass.
9. Calculate the weighted average mass (atomic mass) of all candium particles by adding the relative masses.
