Personality Characteristics Paper Danette Comegys University of Phoenix Personality Characteristics Paper Personality characteristics can be defined as the psychological qualities that contribute to an individual’s enduring and distinctive patterns of feeling, behaving, and thinking (Cervone & Pervin, 2010). Everyone has a unique personality built on personal traits, characteristics, environment and personal histories/experiences. Biological orientation and environment factors play a significant role in determining personality traits. This paper reveals how life experiences affected how my personality characteristics were shaped. Many circumstances in my youth did not give me the opportunity to develop positive attitudes, behaviors or characteristics however friendships and peer group interactions helped me to develop positive characteristics. Based on a combination of early development, social relationships and educational experiences, personality characteristics such as strength, openness/adaptability and perseverance were created. Early Development Many of my personal characteristics directly reflect the dysfunctional relationship between my mother and me. My mother was not much of a nurturer but was a slightly selfish, and cruel, disciplinarian. Some of these attitudes forced her to take a more authoritative role in her parenting style by displaying more restrictive, controlling, and disapproving behavior when interacting with me. Socio-economic factors such as income (job quality) and external (neighborhood) environmental factors also affected her parental attitude and beliefs. Unfortunately, most of the parent-child interaction was conveyed through verbal abuse and beatings. I was a child who constantly sought attention, approval, and love from anyone because my mother could not offer this type of interaction. Many times, I exhibited rebellious
