University of Phoenix Material Case Report Team A Background Information 1. Outline the major symptoms of the disorder discussed in the case. A person with borderline personality disorder often has unstable relationships, low self-esteem, and problems with impulsive behavior that begin by early adulthood. A common feature of this disorder is fear of abandonment, even if the threat of abandonment is not real. Sometimes a patient may react to the fear of being abandoned by rejecting others first, before the person rejects them. This erratic behavior can lead to troubled relationships in every area of life. In Becky’s scenario she expected her mother’s attention throughout her life. In high school she had issues with relationships and later in her sex life. She started to cut herself when she was alone. When ignored even by a friend, she considered that been dishonest. Her dislike to move with the crowd is also one symptom of the disorder. 2. Briefly describe the client’s background. Becky was a 24-year-old woman who was studying in the interviewer’s university. She has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and volunteered to participate for the case project. From her childhood Becky was an attention seeker, especially for her mother’s attention. Her mother grew up as an abused child, married when she was 19 and became pregnant on her honeymoon. Her mother’s frustration has taken over Becky mentally and physically. Her mother has been discussing a sexual abuse incident in her life when Becky was five years old. Becky was a Mormon and went to Baptist church with friends in high school. Later she joined the youth group. Becky takes time to build friendship with people. She analyzes the trustworthiness before getting closer to a friend. She expects her friends to be devoted, honest, and kind to her. The maximum
