Benefits vs. Challenges in Work Relationships
In today’s business environment, you have to build successful work relationships and interact with people in a positive way to achieve your organizational goals. In the quest of achieving work related goals, team communication is essential. However, there are also many challenges involved. The benefits of productive team communication are numerous and rewarding. There are also many difficult challenges to overcome. The following paragraphs outline the benefits and challenges of effective team communication in today’s workplace.
Successful team communication may best be defined as constructive and beneficial relationships. “Concentrate on building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships” (Richmond, 2003). The employee and the employer can both benefit when this type of team communication is established. Another benefit of good team communication is the ability to identify strengths and weaknesses in your work relationships. By focusing on the strengths of each individual team member, specific tasks can then be assigned according to his or her special abilities. For example, someone with great leadership abilities would better benefit the company in a supervisor type role. “An important aspect of being a good communicator is being a good teacher” (Gardali, 2006, p. 247). On the other hand, by avoiding the weak area of the team member, their skills can be applied more effectively to achieve the team’s goal. “All companies benefit from incorporating communications into their tactile structure” (Girard, 2001). Utilizing good team communication will enable companies to recognize all possible opportunities available to them. Open lines of communication allow ideas and input from team members that can greatly benefit the company.
