The Roman Senator Seneca said “Vice can be acquired without a tutor.”
How would you relate this to Socrates defense against the charge of corrupting the youth?
Trouble is easy enough to find without having someone help you find it. For some, trouble finds them. With all the vices readily available to any given person, a tutor would be a waste. Socrates said that he personally did not do anything wrong. If the youth did wrong, harmful things, it was not of his accord. He was not a teacher or a tutor to anyone. If they chose to listen to what he was saying, so be it. He was not the instigator of their listening. What this quote is saying is that anyone, may they be young or old, can become consumed in vice.
Socrates just hit it right on the head with his defense statements. He really did and said nothing wrong. He should not have to take the blame for any of the youth’s wrongdoing. He cannot possibly take the responsibility as their sole negative influence in this world. They could have, and most likely did, corrupt their own minds with the other outside distractions that filled their lives. Their own bad habits and nature within themselves cause them to do the things they do. No one needs the tutelage of Socrates, or anyone, to become corrupt. His accusers are trying to make Socrates look like a crazy, troubled philosopher who is corrupting the youth and causing them to negatively impact the environment.
This quote directly corresponds with Socrates defense. The youth need no one’s help in attaining vice and corruption in their lives.
