Was Coming To America Right?

Day after day there are many people who are fleeing their homelands to come to a place that can give them better future. As a child many of these people never imagine leaving the place that for years they called home. After all America is the place of dreams, a place of experience and culture. But as we walk through the streets of our great America, and we look around at all the many different faces we wonder about the story that these people carry with them. I was one of them, my name is my name is Carmen Solis and I was born in Rio Pedria, Puerto Rico. I came to America in hopes for a better future for my family. Being in New York was a dream, and one I made true. But this is my story, of our great America.
At the time I wanted to leave Puerto Rico there was still tons of things that were going on which just weren’t making things any better. It was the end of World War II, and everyone was going through a rough time. Food was scares and jobs were limited. It’s been around two years now and much hasn’t change. I was still working on my farm, trying to make ends meet in my household, but over time things just don’t work. Little farms like ours were once the backbone of these island, but now with all these change the “U.S. sugar companies gobbled up the land and created vast agricultural proletariat” (Gonzalez, 83), taking away much of the land once held and passed down though families. These jobs were seasonal, where “members only worked a few months out the year” (Gonzalez, 84), which did give many families jobs but only for so long, with not much to fall back on when the season was over.
I was pregnant and knew that if I stayed here in Puerto Rico under these circumstances we would never have made things meet. I was nothing in Puerto Rico, I had no status in society, and I was daughter of a farm worker, the wife of a man who didn’t have much. I came during the year of 1946, the same year I was married.
