Fate, some people believe in it, some people believe it’s bogus. Call it what you may, but fate is something that goes back almost to the beginning of time. The debate over the factor of freewill or fate in the existence of humankind has been going on since before the medieval times. Most Christians believe that fate is not some type of force that sets a predetermined life for you. They believe that God has a plan for everyone which is similar to fate. So the question will always arise is fate real, or is it something someone made up. In “Beowulf “and “A Knight’s Tale “which was in medieval times everyone believed in fate. They believed no matter what a person did he or she could never change there destiny.
Beowulf which is a story about an epic poem; It was written by an unknown author in the Anglo-Saxon times. The hero, Beowulf, is a seemingly invincible person that is able to use his super-human strength and courage to put his people before himself. He encounters hideous monsters and the most ferocious of beasts but he never fears the threat of death. Beowulf is the ultimate epic hero who risks his life countless times for glory and for the good of others. In the story of “Beowulf” fate was a big part of understanding the conclusion of the story. He actually believed as an old man he himself could use his fate to make him capable of slaying the dragon even if it meant him getting torn to bits and eaten. Beowulf might have slain countless enemies with his mighty hand, but he never had dreams of becoming something he could never be just because of who his mother and father were.
In “A Knights Tale” however William Thatcher’s father actually sent him away to an apprentice who taught young boys how to be phenomenal knights. William was never born of royal blood so everyone thought it would be impossible for him to compete.
