My state is North Carolina. The capitol is Raleigh and the largest city is Charlotte. North Carolina is located in the Southern Region of the Unites States. It is bordered on the north by Virginia, on the East by the Atlantic Ocean, on the South by South Carolina and Georgia, and on the West by Tennessee.

North Carolina was named for King Charles I. North Carolina was settled in 1650 and entered the union on November 21, 1789 as the 12th of the original 13 states. It was part of the Confederacy during the Civil War. (1861-1865).

North Carolina is the 25th largest state with 52,672 square miles. Elevation ranges from sea level to 6,684ft above sea level atop Mount Mitchell in the western part of the state. The population, based on the year 2000 census, is 8,049,333. North Carolina has 2 mountain ranges, The Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains.






Industry in North Carolina includes fishing, mining, manufacturing, and tourism. The annual catch on North Carolina’s fishing industry totals 70,000 metric tons. Shrimp is it’s most important catch.

Mining is a small industry and includes stone, phosphate, and lithium minerals. Manufacturing includes clothing, textiles, industrial machinery, electronic equipment and furniture. North Carolina produces denim for your jeans. It is the leading furniture manufacturer in the United States.

Tourism is a $6 billion a year business. It has a diverse geography, which includes beaches and mountains. You can visit the Outer Banks, which has 2 National Parks, Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout. For the mountains you can visit The Great Smoky National Park. North Carolina has 36 state parks and recreational areas.
