Leadership

Submitted by elmitch on October 20, 2008

There have been many instances in my life where I used leadership, when working in groups in school, and then in my jobs and then in being a summer camp counselor. In class we read that a good leader has many aspects one being they have to learn from their experiences and generalize them to real life.
When I was a camp counselor one summer I had to take care of five and six year olds all day, so this really gave me good leadership skills. When working with the kids you had to be very patient with them, and they would follow me and the other counselors around all day and watch what we were doing and just wanted to be right there all the time. With them always wanting to be around though it made us really watch what we were doing because the kids would want to do it to. This helped me to see that you really do need to be careful especially when you are in a leadership position since there are always people looking up to you to see what your doing or what they should be doing, weather it is kids or adults working under you in your career. Another time when I had to use leadership skills was when I was working as a waitress over the summer but I have had experience as a waitress before so I just jumped right into my new job and once I had been there for awhile they would have me train the new staff members they hired. So they would have to follow me around the restaurant for a week or so and watch everything I did and I would have to teach them the correct way to do everything. So I really had to be a leader for the couple of new employees I had to train, because the managers trusted me to train them correct and do the right thing. Just as in working with the kids everyday I had those trainees watching everything I did and listening to what I had to tell them. So they were looking to me for advice and instructions.
