Negotiation
Description of negotiation process
South West TAFE and Deakin University have an understanding, where the TAFE advanced diploma Hospitality and Tourism students are able to undertake work placement in Alice Springs, from this placement the students involved in the joint program, bachelor of management, are able to participate in a the internship offered by Deakin. Some issues faced included the selection process, to be able to participate from a TAFE perspective, we had to be chosen to be involved.
I was successful in gaining a position in this internship program due to my skills, knowledge and application and did not face any difficulty. The distance and cost in travelling to Alice Springs could have been a problem, however not an issue, as class fundraising covered our costs. Although obtaining the internship with this organisation was quite easy for me, it could have been difficult if I had not met the requirements of competence in relation to TAFE studies.
The negotiation process consisted of working closely with Peter Varley (TAFE placement coordinator) for the two months leading up to the internship. There was a series of protocol that each student went through, ranging from application forms and pre-placement briefings. Due to my skills and knowledge I, along with three other students, was selected for the specific host organisation which was Voyages, Alice Spring Resort.
Communication prior to commencing the internship was a key principle involved in the negotiation, I used a range on verbal and written types of communication as face to face was not an option. The host organisation was first contacted by Peter who made initial arrangements after the selections were announced, our group prior to commencing the internship made first contact with The Alice Springs Resort via an email, which we did not receive a reply, then we followed the email up by a number of phone calls in order to obtain the...
