Today we’ll talk about how to use medicines. Before, we, the Chinese people, lived in abject poverty, and couldn’t afford calling a doctor. If the illness was not much too severe, they would wait till they recovered by themselves some day. Now as our nation is getting more and more prosperous, and our life is getting better and better, we pay more and more attention to our own health. Is this a good thing? Not exactly. Many people rely too much on doctors and medicines, which I believe is a fault. For example, some patient says “I have no appetite.” And I ask him what he eats everyday, only to get the answer “ I take this pill and that in the morning, and this pill and that at noon, and this pill and that in the evening.” He eats nothing but many handfuls of pills. And thus I say since you have already taken so many pills, how can you still have your hearty appetite? We live and grow because we eat cereals, not pills. But look at our children. Once they catch a cold we must send them to the hospital, as if there was no cure elsewhere. If they had no injection they would never recover. But we should know that pills are not for daily use, or else there would be not only a waste of medicine resource, but also great harm to human life. For better health and a good life, we should be very careful in taking medicine.
The traditional Chinese way of writing “doctor” is like this: In a square frame there is a sword, and a human hand stands beside it, and there is “wine” below all these. This character means that a man holds a shield to ward off the sword, and use “wine” to cure the illness. Besides, “doctor” in Chinese sounds the same as “one” and “dependence”. Thus we can know that doctor means the most important people to depend upon once you are ill. If you are a doctor you should not think about making profits, but how to let your patients fully depend on you. And you should cure your patient and make him like “one”, which in Chinese culture symbolizes the...
