The Stroop Effect Introduction- Background of investigation Stroop (1935) carried out an investigation into autonomic processing, by inventing the stroop effect.In this, he instructed participants to read a list of colour words written in black ink. This, evidently a very simple task was easy for the participants to carry out. The aim of this experiment is to discover whether people are able to read the word that is placed in a different colour than what is said. The hypothesis is the length of time taken for participants read the words out. IV is the factor that was manipulated by the researcher in the study. DV is the time taken to read out the colour of ink in lists. Method- Participants were aged between 16 and 17 years old which consisted of 20 participants from Billanook College. The genders ranged throughout the groups. Every participant was exposed to the controlled experimental conditions. Groups 1+7 ABC 2 ACB 3+8 BAC 4 BCA 5 CAB 6 CBA Materials The materials used were paper and a stop watch. Procedure 1)Once received the briefed and given the equipment go to an area where it is quit 2)Take it in turns to read through the three papers as quickly as you can 3)While having someone time you 4) Record your results. Results Biased sample- the sample consisted only of students of a particular age range which meant that the results gained are only valid for this population. The results are not generalisable to the whole population. * Timing- the experimenter could never be fully accurate with the timing, as using a stop watch is bound to cause human error. If carried out in future, perhaps the Stroop effect could be done on a computer screen with the colours flashing on a screen before the participants’ eyes and once completed,
