George Washington was the first American president (3A). Washington is summed up as “First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of the countrymen” (1B, 90). George Washington helped shape the United States in three major ways (1A, 90). He commanded the Continental Army, he served as president of the convention, and he was elected as the first president of the United States (1A, 90).
Washington was a 4th generation Virginian (4B, 8). His father’s family moved from England in 1657 (4B, 8). George Washington’s father was called the “town taker” because he was known for manipulating the law to swindle the Indians out of their land (4B, 8). The Washingtons exhibited three distinctive traits (4B, 8). They are: “Passion for acreage, tall and physically strong males, and despite their strength, the males died relatively young” (4B, 8).
Born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia, George Washington was one of nine children (1, 92; 2, 2). Despite a tough childhood, Washington was observant and a hardworker (2, 2). After his father’s death at age eleven he moved in with Lawrence, one of his older brothers (2, 2). Even though this tragedy had struck him at an early age, he still took joy in activities young boys enjoy (1, 92). Washington enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating (1, 92). He also enjoyed dancing and was good at it (1, 92).
At age nineteen, in 1951, Washington was struck by yet another tragic incident (2, 2). Instead of his father, he lost his brother Lawrence who died of Tuberculosis in 1751 (2, 2). Two months later, Sarah, Lawrence’s wife died and George Washington inherited their estate (2, 2). Washington wanted to have as much land as possible, and he increased the estate which he had inherited until he had more than 8,000 acres (2, 2).
