Individuals may embark on a journey for personal reasons, but whether meaning to or not the journey will challenges one’s thinking as it takes us into different worlds.The texts The Tempest by William Shakespeare, Pan’s Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro and Imagine by John Lennon demonstrate the truth of this through focusing on the imaginative journeys and the main characters experience and the effect of these journeys have on other characters to develop new insights and understandings that I discovered.


In William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the imaginative journey Prospero embarks on was, to avenge his betrayers Alonso and Antonio has challenged my thinking of how you can learn from revenge. As His obsession with using magic as punishment to his betrayers is most clearly displayed through dialogue and emotive language. This is evident when he states that their ‘high wrongs I am struck to the quick.’ His magical powers are used to create the tempest, generate illusion and put others to sleep. Through his powers, he is able to direct the whole island and its inhabitants. The illusion Prospero creates through his magic to manipulate others is evident in the banquet. He casts shadows and strange figures to appear and frighten Alonso and his company, as part of his revenge. He also uses magic to put his daughter Miranda, Gonzalo and Alonso to sleep. The recurring image of sleeping and dreaming is evident in these scenes, where Miranda states, ‘Rather like a dream, than an assurance.’ Prospero’s journey of revenge is altered to become a journey of forgiveness and redemption, also evident through the use of emotive language within dialogue, as he states to Alonso ‘Let us not burden ourselves with a forgiveness that is gone.’ This alternation is due to his slave Ariel who is the catalyst for change.
