Christian Metal music and Heavy Metal music: one would think they have completely different lyrical messages and musical content. Although some bands do have opposing lyrical content, the messages come to the masses through similarly dark and heavy riffs and beats. The Christian bands don’t preach the word of God, but present scriptures and stories or lessons from the Bible in a way that influences fans of heavy metal. On the other hand, secular heavy metal bands tend to express themselves through darker, less “God praising” lyrics. Both genres of metal have various sub-levels of lyrical and instrumental presentation, and the numerous bands that can be found online or on store shelves give testament to this. The range can be from Van Halen-esque bands, to bands that produce sludgy riffs and have almost indecipherable lyrics.
Since both groups of music can be linked to the same overarching genre of metal, similarities can be found in their lyrics. This occurs in the case of the Christian group, “Paramaecium,” and the secular group, “Lacuna Coil.” In Paramaecium’s song “Night Fears Morning,” the singer speaks of people ridiculing his faith and that he finds it frightening to think that they could be correct, and that his “beliefs are but imaginings.” Similarly, in Lacuna Coil’s song “Heaven’s a Lie,” the singer says “Set me free, your heaven’s a lie, set me free with your love, set me free.” Both lyricists express that they want to be free of their respective problems. They both feel that, in their situations, heaven and the belief system that revolves around it conjure doubt in society and within them. They don’t find previous thought of God and Christianity represented through the Bible or worship is truthful. The feelings of loss and deception that these lyrics can give to listeners support the fact that, though the bands take opposing sides in religious support through music, they both use similar lyrical techniques to affect the emotions...
