For many years, I was a strong believer in the strength of the United States and their superiority when it comes to nuclear capabilities. Every problem that the United States had with any country that seemed to spark up trouble, was a problem that could be solved by nuking them. That was the solution that seemed fit for me. As of late though, and after the research I have done the policy I held on nukes has dramatically changed and I no longer view it as a necessity to success. It’s wrong, it’s absolutely irresponsible, and it means there was an extreme failure of communication.
Probably the scariest and most overlooked part of the nuclear explosion is the original “Shock Wave” (Landau 9) that hits at least 30 seconds before the mushroom cloud appears. This cloud has winds upwards of 400 per hour, that are capable of burning flesh off the bone instantly, and damaging anyone’s eyes within 10 miles. This effect is a double edged sword, because as it may rid the area of all military personnel, the innocent inhabitants who live nearby fall within the radius of the blast site usually. How do we justify killing innocent people just so we may get rid of a few who ruin life for the rest of them? I know I can’t live with the fact that after Hiroshima’s attack happened their lands were radioactive close to 60 years after it all happened. There were thousands of birth defects year after year, the death toll was more than 200 thousand within a couple days, and the infant mortality rate after that was ridiculously high. Surely there could’ve been an alternative to the fiery devastation that took place there that day. If only people would’ve considered the terrible consequences that would’ve taken place later. A vast amount of people died needlessly that day that could’ve been avoided. Not to mention the survivors of the incident were forced to inhale radioactive ash and drink the poisonous water for weeks after it occurred. How can man justify...
