Macbeth, Quotes

Act I Scene: VII Lines: 1-5

Macbeth: If it were done when ‘tis done, then ‘twere well
It were done quickly; if the assassination
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success; that but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all
Translation
If it were done when it is done, then all is well
If the assassination were done quickly
Could catch the consequence
With his death a success; that but this blow
Might be the whole thing and the ending thing

Duncan and guests have eaten and gone to bed. Macbeth is second guessing his decision to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth came and convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan.

I chose this quotation because it is the last real time where Macbeth shows goodness. After he kills Duncan he continually kills and does evil things. Mostly the people he kills are people who he considers a threat. It is the first time Macbeth shows some backbone against his wife evil idea. Also this is Macbeths only soliloquy where he is arguing for something good all the others consisted of evil thoughts.

Porter: Knock, knock, knock! Who’s there, I’ the name of Beelzebub? Here’s a farmer that hangs himself on the expectation of plenty; come in time; have napkins enough about you; here you’ll sweat for ‘t.

Translation

Knock, knock, knock! Who’s there, I’ the name of Satan? Here’s a farmer that puts himself on the line in the expectation of getting something for it; your arrival is opportune; have handkerchiefs with you; you will sweat a lot here.

Lady Macbeth and Macbeth have killed Duncan. The Porter is woken up by knocking at the gate. Macduff and Lennox have come to see the King (Duncan).
