To be a teenager is to be in a time of fluctuation and more often than not in western society, a time of rebellion. There are certain rituals that take place during the teens such as socializing with friends in a place other than school, more responsibilities around the house and less juvenile relationships with members of the opposite sex. Biologically teenagers change dramatically, with girls usually starting their periods and maturing into a phase where their bodies get ready to have children whereas boys develop facial hair, their voices deepen and other matters. They also become more aware of themselves sexually and it is this period in which most people are experimental with their sexuality as well as drugs and their own personal style. In today’s modern and fast paced society, teenagers have had to rush through life and begin adulthood earlier than the generations before.

Since the start of World War II, the popular media has portrayed a thinner and thinner body image as the ideal body type for men and women. Women and young girls have become more self-conscious about imperfections and how their bodies are to be perceived by society, leading to major issues such as eating disorders, low self-esteem, and decreased confidence. Teens should not be influenced by people’s opinions towards their body image. Some might argue that young teens are being influenced by television and advertising and that may allow them to strive to make themselves look a certain way. Seeing as many teens in the world today are worried about how they dress, what they look like, and how they may eat, this would compel the youth to become more healthy and be thinner by eating less and exercising more.
The questionable problems that arise from Comprehensive Sexual Education include promotion of teen sex, and the morality of schools, instead of parents, promoting and teaching sexual education. According to Jane Friedman’s report, teen pregnancy has significantly declined since 1991 (1). Right wing conservatives credit abstinence-only programs for this statistic and liberals believe it is their contraception program. “ The federal government only funds abstinence education, even though at least 75 percent of parents say they want teens to be taught about both abstinence and contraception” (1). Although abstinence would be a significantly better choice, it is important for teens to know the consequences of sexual intercourse.

Due to the influences of the media teens believe it is ok to have lots of sex without taking proper precautions. There are many teens who do not even know the dangers that sex brings. Unprotected sex can lead to unplanned pregnancies, STD’s and HIV. While all of these effects of unprotected sex are bad, HIV is one that is increasing the most each day. HIV is a disease that is sweeping the nation due to multiple partners and unprotected sex.
