Imagine a world in which people are clothed only in blue, white, or beige. No other colors are allowed. Shirts with required collars must be tucked in, and no jeans are permitted. Skirts cannot be any shorter than two inches above the knee, and clothes must be an “appropriate size.” Clothes must be made of cotton. No type of “headgear” is allowed. All people must look the same in order for learning to take place properly. Nobody is unique. Any deviation will result in harsh penalties. Does this sound like a science fiction novel? Or the dress code at Stateville prison? No, this is the uniform dress code for many of this nation’s schools. School districts use these codes because they believe the uniforms keep students focused on school, but clothing should not be a factor if teachers are doing their job.
An argument for uniforms is that they will do away with gang identification. Although the uniforms make the children look the same, they do not make the gang members forget who they are. Parents who have been indifferent to preventing their children from joining gangs, or wearing their gang colors, will not immediately become responsible as their children are now wearing the uniforms. They will still be able to identify things like hair, tattoos, and gang signs. Almost all schools had some sort of dress code before the implementation of school uniforms. Of course they varied but were all fairly the same as proper school attire (No inappropriate words or acronyms, shirts/blouses must be buttoned, etc). An overwhelming majority of students follow these reasonable regulations with no major issues. Those that don’t follow the regulations face consequences ranging from simple warnings to suspensions. In districts with school uniform policies, instead of punishing the few offenders the school is punishing every student by making them dress the same. It makes things difficult for everyone.
Some say that poor students will now look just like the rich...
