The following conditions must be included in a standardized contract to reduce the frequency of violations and abuse by the employer. Contracts should be written in simple and concise language that is easy to understand. Additionally, contracts should be written or translated into a language the maid is familiar with, though it need not be her primary language. For example, an Indonesian maid would prefer the standard Malay language compared to English. The most important aspect of the contract is that the worker is able to understand the contents of the contract and refer to it as needed. The domestic worker must possess a copy of the contract. Various copies of the contract should be made and given to the worker’s respective embassy, her family, the agent, and the employer.
The list below includes minimum conditions that should be in the contract:
A. Working Hours
1. The domestic worker must be given at least eight hours of rest per day.
2. The domestic worker must be given adequate rest time and meal breaks during the day.
3. The domestic worker must have at least one rest day per week, not to be less than 24 hours.
4. If the employer requests the domestic worker to work on her day off, she must be paid compensation in the amount of triple times her usual pay.
B. Working Conditions
1. The domestic worker must be provided with accommodation free of charge. This accommodation must include electricity, fixtures, including blankets, pillows, towels, and bathroom amenities, and access to bathroom facilities. Accommodation must be adequately ventilated and possess a door which locks from the inside for security reasons.
2. The domestic worker must be provided with three meals per day, consisting of proper, nutritious food free of charge. The maid shall also be provided with additional snacks free of charge.
3. The domestic worker must be allowable to freely go out from the home on her rest days...
