I have never been a fan, in fact I find it ridiculous, but I never thought it to be criminal, or unlawful. Apparently others find saggy pants outrageous because the movement to end the sag is rapidly growing. What a waste of time and misplaced priorities. There are more important issues that our country and those in charge of it should be focused on. Yet, here I sit debating the saggy pants crackdown. Besides being unconstitutional it is ludicrous to pass laws or police a fashion choice. The reason that so many people choose to wear their pants low, saggy or distastefully is partly because it is nothing more then a trend, and partly because they just have bad taste.
The bare-your-britches fashion is believed to have started in prisons. The actual reason why is debatable. Some say it was because inmates aren't given belts with their baggy uniform pants to prevent hangings and beatings. (CNN) Some say it was fashion statement that started in prison from men wanting to advertise that their butts were literally open for business for the right price. (brother) Regardless the reason, the saggy pants craze has come full circle -- low-slung street strutting in some cities may soon mean run-ins with the law, including a stint in jail. (CNN) Cities like Atlanta, Trenton, Dallas are all trying to pass laws against the sag. In a small town in Louisiana you can actually not only get fined $500, but you can spend six months in jail. (CNN) Okay, I understand that it can be annoying, distracting, even offesnsive to look at someone and see that their underwear is showing. “Keep it in your pants!!!!” crosses my mind, but to actually have to bail my friend out of jail because someone decided it was unlawful seems ludicrous. The law won’t change the mentality that says, “Wearing pants below my butt is a good thing.” How is a law going to change that? Oh wait, this does work, right?
