As Abraham Maslow, a human relationist and creator of Maslow’s hierarchy, would put it, many organizations need are used to motivate performance. His hierarcy consist of physiological needs(survival function), security needs (emotional environment), belongingness needs(social process), esteem needs(self-respect), and the most important self-actualization needs(person’s potential for growth).



With Wheelworks, there are at least three of the needs which are belongingness, esteem and self-actualization. Founders, Clint Paige and Peter Mooney have been with the company about twenty-four years. Their continuous successful have lead to the sell of more than 10,000 units of bikes and their current revenue produce about 10 million.

“We have employed forty-five people on a full-time, year-round base,” Clint explained. He also added that the two of them hired about thirty seasonal part-time employees. Peter Mooney stated the employee here have a “passion for cycling”, and that they are here to get the “in-dept knowledge” to learn more.



Another motivated concept, developed by Frederick Herzberg called Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory which is Motivation factor or “people’s satisfaction” and Hygiene factor or “people’s dissatisfaction” (440). Every employee is motivated when the person sees achievement and recognition. For Kirk, a professional biker and a sale staff for Wheelwork, is motivated by different things.

“I am motivate to educate people about the sport of cycling,” about his experience in Europe he told us from his interview. Another motivation for Kirk would be competiveness, anxiously explained Doug Shoemaker, young sale staff possibly manager.
