Immigration: an unstoppable disease?

Patrick J. Buchanan is a respected journalist who points out the growing concern about immigration in the United States. In his own words, “the America of our grandchildren will be another country altogether… a giant Brazil of the North.” The rapid growth in America has brought to it a giant wave of immigrants who not only bring their customs but also their own way of life. Buchanan offers several reasons for which we should be worried; explaining why America is losing its heritage and most importantly it’s identity as a country.

During the Cold War era, many Americans stood together under one common belief: communism is bad. Everything revolved around that one ideal. People grew united and fought for the same cause. Now, due to the rapid spread of immigration, many do not ponder into the affairs of others. The cultures are so different; it makes it hard for people to relate to one another when everyone believes in wholly different ideas. The lack of one common goal, the hasty rise of different cultures and the monstrous size of the United States has made it hard for people to relate and become united under one common belief. This assumption is based on the fact that Buchanan believes that under one common goal America will stand united as one.
“We were confident and proud of who we were… But due to the Immigration Act of 1965 and the cultural revolution of the ‘60s, that America is now gone forever.” Buchanan assumes that laws and events served as catalysts to the collapse of a united America. With this said, Buchanan believes that by 2050 there will be three times the population that there was in the ‘60s – 420 million. Immigration as intimidating as it may sound does not pose a threat to a country that has been inhabited by people all over the world long ago before the Immigration Act was passed in 1965.
