Financial Statements

The company that I chose to analyze for this assignment is the oil company Chevron Corporation. While researching information I found some very interesting information. I did not know that they also had a branch that was created right here in my hometown of Beaumont, Texas. This information makes the analysis of this company even more interesting. There will be information about the company presented like its history, how it began, and what makes it different from its competitors. Also I will compute the current ratio, inventory ratio, accounts receivable turnover ratio, debt to equity ratio, return on assets ratio, return on equity ratio, and the gross margin on sales.
Chevron can trace its roots in the oil business back to 1897 when oil was discovered at Pico Canyon (Chevron Corp. 2008). This is when the Pacific Coast Oil Company was formed (Chevron Corp. 2008). Later this company turned into the “Standard Oil Company of California” and then when they acquired Gulf Oil Corporation in 1984 they became Chevron (Chevron Corp. 2008). They also had another branch in Beaumont, Texas in 1901 called the Texas Fuel Company. This company then turned into The Texas Company and then into Texaco. In 2001 these two branches came together to shape Chevron Texaco but this was not conveying a strong enough presence in the world so in 2005 they changed the name to just Chevron (Chevron Corp. 2008).
There are many competitors in the oil business. Some of Chevron’s competitors are Conoco Phillips, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and Murphy Oil Company. The difference between Chevron and its competitors is that out of the three listed above only one is worldwide and that is Murphy Oil Corporation (Murphy Oil Corporation, 2008). Chevron is also different to me because a branch of this company was founded right here where I live. Conoco Phillips is the third largest energy companies in the United States but they are not worldwide like Chevron (Conoco Phillips. n.d.). Exxon...
