Many people wonder what happens on a daily basis in their local emergency room, is it really like their weekly hospital drama or is it completely different? The emergency room looks like a picture, sterile needles and scissors lined up next to the beds, clean sheets and pillows just waiting to be used. Sick and injured people lined the beds as nurses tended to their needs, “nurses make up the majority of hospital staff and provide more primary care to patients than any other class of healthcare provider,” (Physicians News). The emergency room reminds me of a beehive with the queen bee, the doctor, and the worker bees, the nurses, many people take for granted the hard work that the nurses do each day.
I was apprehensive as the day started; with people rushing in and out of the emergency room I was easily overwhelmed. While walking though the hospital everything seems so perfect, every instrument had its designated spot it was laid out perfectly. The waiting room was modest but comfortable. There were several couched in various pastel colors, each with a coffee table at the base. The waiting room had a very calm and lived in vibe too it. While waiting for the nurse I would fixate on the door, the door that could possibly lead to birth or death. Every time the revolving doors spun there was another family in distress, another injury, another surgery, another opportunity to save a life.
I found the nurse who was going to show me around in the main lobby, like most people I had a preconceived notion of how nurses are portrayed. Nurse Johnson completely contradicted my expectations. Young and eager, willing to do what ever it takes to get the job done, with new scrubs and shiny white shoes, it was easy too see that she was new too the job. The veteran nurses had a different image to them, they were modest and noble, and the younger nurses look up to them.
