I was in complete shock. The first day of class and we were given an assignment to write a 2-3 page essay describing something significant about ourselves that relates to a value choice in healthcare. I was lost. I had no clue about that meant or what to pick as my topic. Then after reading the chapters assigned in our ethics book, my topic became clearer. I was going to write about independence.
I chose independence based on a number of reasons. As I sit back on look back on my life and the choices that I make: independent would be a word that anyone who knows me would say. I was only 17 years old, a senior in high school, when I got pregnant. I was scared and clueless about what to do. The father of my child left me at that time which just made it that much tougher. It took me a while to realize that everything happens for a reason and in life you are faced with tough decisions. I grew up a lot my senior year. I graduated 10th in my class with a 3.8 grade point average and convinced myself I could and would make it somewhere in life. I had little support from my family. They were convinced I wouldn’t make it anywhere being a single mother. I took their words and turned them around and used them as motivation to strive to excellence. even tougher then. The same words were still playing in the back of my mind: “Ashley you are never going to make it anywhere in life: you’re a failure.”
I grew up, moved out of my parent’s house, and got a part time job while I went back to school to make something of myself and prove to everyone I could do it. I was independent; I received no help from anyone. My son’s father wasn’t in the picture I was all alone. But still that just gave me more motivation to live my life to the fullest.
To this day I am still doing it on my own. I am a single full time mother; I work as a nurse full time; and going back to school...
