What is terrorism and how has it changed over the years?
Terrorism is not new, and even though it has been around since the beginning of “recorded” history, it is relatively hard to define. Terrorism is described as strategized attack against oppression, which is mostly justified by “holy” reasons. Terrorism is an unpredictable and unpreventable tactic that is secretive and very cheap compared to warfare. But, terrorism in certain areas is commonly group with criminal activity. This is why it so hard to have a “war on terrorism”. In a sense, it’s like having a full-out “war on crime”. But, America uses several definitions for terrorism. The United States Department of Defense defines terrorism as “the calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.” The FBI describes as-"Terrorism is the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives." Yet, the U.S. Department of State explains terrorism as the "premeditated politically-motivated violence perpetrated against non-combatant targets by sub-national groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience”. Yet, with all these similar even conflicting ideas; terrorism strategy remains the same. To commit an act of violence that draws the attention of the people, government or the world to notice their cause. In most cases, it is an act of revenge against an organization, state, country, or person. The effectiveness of a terrorizing act depends on the act.
