Letter To President (Econ Class)

Dear Mr. President,
There are fourteen countries involved in OPEC. They are Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Qatar, Indonesia, Socialist Peoples Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Nigeria, Ecuador, Angola, and Gabon. All of these countries help stabilize the oil market and make sure oil producers get a fair rate of return on their oil. The OPEC nations have lost complete control of the prices of their oil because they pump as much as they possibly can to try to decrease the price of the oil but they can only pump so fast. They have been pumping full force since March of 2005.

There are other entities besides OPEC that help with the sale and production of gasoline. There is the basic cost of oil which gets about 53% of the money consumers pay per gallon, there is also federal and state taxes which gets about 19% of the money, refineries also help produce the oil by making it into gas and they get about 19% of the money as well, and then there is distribution and marketing which gets about 9% of the money we spend on a gallon of gas. We, as consumers, spend a lot of money on taxes and advertising when it’s really not necessary. We all need gas for our cars so what is the point in advertising? We’re all going to buy gas no matter what. The taxes are just so high on gas that it hurts our wallets. At least lower the tax rate on gas and help keep a little bit of money in our pockets.

There has to be something we can do about the increasing gas rate. We cannot blame OPEC for everything but we can figure out ways to help reduce what we pay. Mr. President help out the consumers by lowering the tax rate and keep our economy strong. That’s all we ask for, is your sympathy and help. Thank you for your time.

Respectfully,

Brittney
