McCain Vs. Obama ~ Education
I completely agree with Senator Obama when it comes to the education policy. We need quality teachers and that means higher teacher pay. I believe Senator Obama is also right to call for politicians to work with teachers to create high standards for our school classrooms.
First off, I am impressed by Obama’s plan and encouraged by the attention of the reforms his campaign is proposing. That said, these reforms are extensive and will require a lot of local oversight from already resource-strapped districts. (themelononline.com) Senator Obama believes that we should not be forced to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standardized tests. (themelononline.com) I agree with this 100 percent, because I believe that the No Child Left Behind act, in effect has removed opportunities for many teachers to progress their curriculum with the arts, sciences, history, and quality literature because they must teach the students to the test.


Another plan that I thought was helpful was that Obama will provide funding for is improved teacher education and certification programs, ongoing professional development opportunities, and service scholarships for teachers who commit to spending four or more years in high-need districts and neighborhoods. Obama also encourages mentoring of new teachers as well as building in more time for teachers to collaborate with one another. (obama.com)
One thing I have noticed, is that many schools have been redesigning the way the operate so that they are more successful in teaching all students, by rethinking the factory-model that we inherited from reforms a century ago and creating schools that allow teachers to work in teams, personalize instruction for students and collaborate together to create a more rigorous and relevant curriculum.
