Examen Lears references to nature.
Lear is shocked as he is left isolated by Goneril. He realizes in a state of shock that he has “done her wrong” referring to Cordelia. Goneril has reduced Lear so low by her filial ingratitude that he becomes a loud, ranting commoner, who indulges in empty flourishes of power and threats of revenge. Lear calls on nature to curse Goneril, in order to get revenge on her ingratitude.
“Into her womb convey sterility! Dry up in her the organs of increase, And from her derogate body never spring A babe to honour her!
Lear uses references to nature to portray the vile and horrendous manner in which they are meant. The ingratitude from his daughter, Goneril has poisoned his mind and he crushes Goneril in an extremely violent way. The same way as she turned her back on him after all he had given her.
