Even A Small Change Can Make a Huge Difference.
Generally, the first thing we want to know about a disease is what the cure is and how to obtain the medication. For AIDS, we cannot answer those questions at all. According to The New Webster’s International Encyclopedia(1996 Edition), AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is a viral disease that is associated with an acquired deficiency of the immune system caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV. The UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS) has reported its global epidemic update for the year 2007 and has stated that about 33.2 million people are living with AIDS, meanwhile death caused by AIDS reached almost 2.1 million and approximately 2.5 million were newly infected with AIDS (December 2007). Observing these statistics, the seriousness of this disease cannot be taken for granted. Thus, the time has come for some changes to take place in order to keep this epidemic under control.
People at highest risk for contracting HIV include those engaged in unprotected random sex and also intravenous drug users who share needles. As a result, creative approaches regarding new preventive methods are now on the horizon. For instance, researchers are studying whether male circumcision and diaphragms can be used to prevent HIV infection (USA TODAY, 15 August 2006). In my opinion, providing adequate preventive methods will only provoke the rise of immoral acts like random sex and drug abuse. More people are prone to engage in such wrongful activities because they are convinced that modern preventive measures will protect them from contracting AIDS. I propose that the society should reinforce their inner spirit with strong believes, principles and disciplines instead of filling their pockets with durable condoms and sterile syringes. Moral values like remaining faithful to one partner, learning to say ‘no’ to negative influences, and practicing a healthy lifestyle may sound simple but...
