Regardless of whether or not a higher power was involved, recently my life was miraculously spared. And this is my story.
It was Labor Day, and it had been raining all day long. For days my family and I sat around the television, our eyes glued to the image that had been plastered on the screen all day. It was becoming a tradition for our family to gather together during hurricane season and watch the radar closely, eager to see where it was going and who would be affected. We all knew the hurricane on it's way, Hurricane Gustav, would be close to us, but weren't sure exactly how close. As I soon found out, Hurricane Gustav had made it's way to Madison, and it paved the way to what was by far the scariest moment of my entire life. It was time for me to head back up to school, which is about an hour north of my house in Madison. I got in my PT Cruiser and headed out on what would eventually be the longest drive I've ever driven to school.
The rain was relentless, pounding me and every one else that was stuck out on the road on that dreadful day. The skies were dark and miserable, and it was clear that a hurricane was on it's way. The ground was covered in standing water, probably being caused by a combination of poor or clogged drainage and the extensive downpour of rain. As I looked out the window, I could see the trees being thrashed violently by the wind. It was clear that this was no day to be driving, and certainly no day to be driving fast. Unfortunately, I paid no mind to what was happening around me, and it almost cost me my life.
Now my trips to school are long, but when you have to drive for an hour 4 or more times in a week, they become so much longer. And on this day, I was ready to get back to school and start on my homework for the weekend. So I started out my journey with caution and care. Unfortunately, things didn't stay that way for long....
