As my eyes skimmed over the field, I saw a skinny golden boy running, completely exposed. First of all, I am from a small school. The last thing I expected to see at our football game was a streaker. It’s not like things of this nature happen every day in our town of Big Drip’. Streakers, but not our school elegantly grace many high school football games. No, not our school. The location of Dripping Springs shelters us from what’s called the norm, most of the time.
Dripping Springs is a very small town. If we didn’t have a school system, then there would be no town. Our population is maybe 1,000 ‘folks.’ The climax of every week is our high school football game. We always lose, but our town worships the football team, and the team thinks they are gods. Every game is the same. At the pep rally, the football captains say, “We’re gunna kick some Lockhart ass!” Everyone yells obnoxious obscenities. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Both young and old come to each and every game. I don’t know why they even bother. The same thing happens every time. We lose. It’s inevitable. We pretty much suck at football, but everyone still loves it.
It was a football game like any other, I was on the drill team, and we had just finished our halftime show. Breathing hard, we sat down on the red paved sideline. The other team’s pom-squad was about to perform when a lanky figure, which I assumed was the mascot, ran onto the field. All the girls on the pom-squad started screaming, and I turned to see what all the commotion was about. At first glance, the figure truly did seem to be the mascot, a lion. The shape was both the correct color and had a mane of a blonde mass. But a double take proved to our horror and amazement, it was not. This guy had spray painted himself metallic gold and had long blond greasy dreadlocks. “Seniors ’04” was scrawled on his back and chest. Was this guy for real? Why was he representing the class before us?
I could only imagine what he...
