I work at a renowned financial intuition and as we all know these last couple of years and especially last couple months with the closure of banks haven’t been good. Using the proper channels of communication is more important than ever to get out important updates and new business plans out to your employees to implement.
Telephone conversations or audio conferencing I would say is the most important channel of communication. At my position I have conference calls with area’s District Manager three times a week to discuss our plan of action for the week, updates on new policies, new promotions, best practices and feed back. I believe these calls are effective because there is transactional communication amongst the callers, you get to learn new polices, procedures & promotions first hand from your boss. If there is something you don’t understand or agree with, you can have immediate feedback or get help with it over the phone. Being able to speak over the phone allows you to pick up on some verbal cues you wouldn’t be able to pick on with something written. From the pitch and stress in the voices of the callers, you can pick up on what’s important and what to be clear on.
Electronic mail in my profession could be tied for most important, but I have listed it as the second most important, because 1.) Everyone do not read their e-mails and/or read them in a timely matter 2.) When people do read e-mails, especially long ones, they just skim right through it and may miss the importance of the e-mail. For those reasons is why I didn’t list e-mail as number one. You can be very concise, specific and reach a broad audience instantly with e-mail, which are its strengths, but t the end of the day you cannot make people read or read thoroughly the e-mails they receive. E-mail is a good media to get things out quickly, but I would follow it up by some sort of telephone call to make sure everyone is on the same page and understands...
