The book that I chose was a story about a woman that decided to get an abortion in the late 1930s. The name of that woman was Mrs. MacAfee. The book never mentioned her first name. Mrs. MacAfee decided that she wanted to get an abortion in 1939 when she got pregnant soon after the birth of her second child. The book talks about how desperate she was and the state of panic that she was experiencing because she thought that there would be no way that she would be able to financially and emotionally support this child at her very young age of 21. When Mrs. MacAfee decided that she wanted this child aborted she went to the doctor’s office and asked if there was anything that he could do because there was no way that she would be able to make it for long with two children let alone the third that she had on the way. The doctor lectured her about how life is a beautiful thing ant that she would be slapping God in the face if she got an abortion. She persisted and he gave her something to take that would make her period come if she was late and he assured her that it wouldn’t hurt the fetus if there was one. Soon after she had been taking the drug she passed something and then her period came. She still thinks that she passed a fetus and that the doctor was doing her a favor by not telling her that he was giving her a drug that would abort the baby.
