Finance Canada oversees the development of tax law and other measures, including legislation governing banks and other federal financial institutions, and payments to provinces such as equalization, all of which the Minister of Finance is responsible for.

The Department is therefore involved in preparing many bills that come before Parliament. In an average year a quarter of all the legislation going to Parliament is sponsored by the Minister of Finance. In some years Finance’s share is even greater. The Department releases draft legislation for consultation. Also available here is information on current Finance legislation. Employment Insurance pilot projects continue to support unemployed Canadians
CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, October 12, 2010 - The Honourable Gail Shea today announced that the Government of Canada is continuing three Employment Insurance (EI) pilot projects to help Canadians through the economic recovery.
"A priority of this government is to help Canadians find jobs as the economy continues to recover," said Minister Shea. "Our government is continuing support for these pilots and giving a hand up to Canadian workers who need it most."
EI pilot projects allow the Government to test new approaches and assess impacts on Canada's workforce.
The Working While on Claim pilot project, available across Canada, allows EI claimants to earn extra money while receiving income support. The Best 14 Weeks pilot project calculates EI benefits based on the highest 14 weeks of earnings over the year preceding a claim. These two projects will be extended for 8 months.
A third pilot project, the Extended EI Benefits pilot project, will provide an extra 5 weeks of support to 21 regions until September 15, 2012. This particular pilot project will conclude earlier in some regions if there is sustained economic recovery.
