With players Heath Shaw and Alan Didak suspended due to disciplinary problems, Collingwood entered the match unsure if they were able to pull off the win they so desperately needed and most thought the result could only go one way; a sure win for St Kilda.
Chris Dawes took the helm and led the charge with his first kick hitting the mark to give Collingwood an early lead. Dawes also proved that kicking goals was not his only forte when he out-muscled James Gwilt to take a clean mark. Dane Swan took up the challenge as well and booted consecutive goals which left the Saints reeling from its effects.
But they were not about to give up. Following Travis Cloke’s failed attempt to stretch the lead to four goals late in the first quarter, the Saints put one away with Justin Koschitzke’s goal.
Soon to retire, Robert Harvey urgently tried to motivate his to team to up their game but few responded with enthusiasm. The daunting lead Collingwood had established was too great a wall.
Throughout the game, Collingwood were hungrier for the ball, beating the Saints to it time and again, and once in hand, made better use of it. After the main break with Collingwood having a staggering 24 point lead the Saints looked hard-pressed to get back in the game.
Tarkyn Lockyer’s goal spurred his already fired up teammates to add to the score as Dawes and John Anthony extended the lead to 31 points. St Kilda just couldn’t find their game, failing to shake off the close marking of Collingwood and fumbling on its forward attacks and instead of retaining possession chose to kick long, losing the ball in the process.
In a last ditch attempt to destroy that wall of points Collingwood had built, Stephen Milne, Sam Fisher and Adam Schneider found their feet and goals which closed the margin to a hair thin nine points but failed to capitalize on this momentum with Swan putting out the flames and collecting his third.
