The artist I have picked to write about is Giovanni Bellini. I chose to write about Giovanni Bellini because of his unique art style. Bellini, an Italian artist from the renaissance era, he introduced a new degree of realism to European art. His paintings are mostly influenced by his love of religion, nature and family. I also feel strongly about religion, nature and family; which make his paintings more captivating, to me. Everything he feels strongly about he incorporates in his paintings. Bellini’s art made Venice the new leader of renaissance art in Italy; overcoming Florence and Rome.


Giovanni Bellini was born in Venice in 1426. There is not much known about Bellini’s family. His father’s name was Jacopo Bellini, his brother was Gentile Bellini and his brother-in-law was Andrea Mantegna. It is believed that Giovanni and his brother began their careers as assistants in their father’s shop. Bellini learned a lot more about art, as an assistant, because he was learning from the best artists of the time. During these times his knowledge of the art lifestyle flourished and became more well known among artists.

The skills Giovanni developed in his father’s shop allowed him to open up his own art school. The school was called “The Venetian School of Painting”; located in Venice, Italy. His new use of coloring, flow, and atmosphere he used on landscapes, had a great effect on his painting school, especially on 2 of his pupils, Giorgione and Titian.

In his early paintings, Bellini worked with tempera. He combines a detailed style with religious and gentle humanity feelings. His first phase as an artist was strongly influenced by his brother-in-law, Andrea Mantegna. Mantegna influenced Giovanni to paint, “Agony In The Garden”. That painting was the first of a series of landscape scenes that continued to develop for the next century. In 1475, Antonello da Messina's paintings showed Bellini the...
