Abnormal Behavior and Psychopathology In this paper I will analyze the historical and contemporary views of abnormal behavior and psychopathology. In doing so, I will address the origins of Abnormal Psychology, provide a brief overview of how Abnormal Psychology evolved into a scientific discipline, and assess the theoretical viewpoints and interpretations of the biological, psychosocial, and sociocultural models. Origins of Abnormal Psychology Even though the field of abnormal psychology, as a scientific discipline, has existed for a little more than 100 years, the explanations used to account for abnormal behavior go back to the Stone Age. Cave dwellers attempted to treat mental disorders by means of chipping away at the skull until a hole penetrated the skull. It was believe that with doing this it would release all the evil and troubles would be able to leave the patient in this crude manner. This operation is now known as “trephining” (Butcher, Mineka, & Hooley, 2007). After the fall of Rome, superstitious views dominated popular thinking about mental disorders for over 1,000 years. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, people’s behavior that was associated with mental illness was believed to be possessed by the devil and endured being tortured to rid the demon from the individual. From the turn of the eighteenth century into the twentieth century, mental illness was viewed as being beyond the individual’s control. It is believed that “the dominant social, economic, and religious views of the times have had a profound influence over how people view abnormal behavior” (Butcher, Mineka, & Hooley, 2007, p 55). Thoughts pertaining to the mentally ill being possessed by demons began to move toward “reasoned, scientific studies” (Butcher, Mineka, & Hooley, 2007).
