esggggggggggggggggggggLots of us thought the whole purpose of buying Chrysler was for Daimler (aka Mercedes) to get their hands on the lucrative Jeep franchise (which, with the introduction of the 2007 Jeep Compass, has totally jumped the shark*). That the report comes on the same day Daimler-Chrysler announced that they will cut 13,000 jobs isn't much of a surprise either.
But another Automotive News story said that one possible buyer for Chrysler is General Motors. Now that is a surprise.
What would happen in a world where General Motors bought Chrysler? Would we see the GMC Acadia become the basis for the next Jeep Grand Cherokee? Would the Chevrolet HHR, which looks like a rebadged Chrysler PT Cruiser, actually become a rebadged Chrysler PT Cruiser? Would I finally be able to get my dream pickup, a GMC Sierra with Dodge's Cummins turbodiesel? Would we get an American sedan that looks as good as the Chrysler Sebring and drives as well as the Saturn Aura?
And most importantly, would the addition of the Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep brands give GM the boost it needs to regain its position of prominence -- or would the whole thing come crashing down in a flaming heap of corporate wreckage?
