History with colonialism: In 1820 the UAE states of Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi signed a Treaty with the British Government suppressing piracy and the area becomes known to as the Trucial Coast (Emirates.org). In 1892 Britain signs agreements with the those states which gives Britain control over their foreign affairs and each state control over its own internal affairs(Emirates.org). In 1952 a “Trucial Council” was formed between those five original states and two others in order to maintain cooperation from each other (Emirates.org). 1968 the British Prime Minister Harold Wilson announced his plan of complete withdrawal of all British troops from the Gulf by 1971 (Emirates.org). The withdrawal would leave the emirates to deal with their own external affairs which ultimately lead to the discussions on formation of a federation of the emirates. 1971 Iran occupies the islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Mousa. The formation of the United Arab Emirates was established in 1971 that included the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah. A year later the seventh and final emirate of Ras Al Khaimah joined. Britain and the United Arab Emirates signed a treaty of friendship and have been allies ever since.
