Parental Notification of Minor’s Abortion
The excuses need to be put to rest, and the lives and futures of young women must be made a priority in our schools and abortion clinics. We must push for these clinics to at least notify theclient's parents of the abortion if they are underage. We must push for accountability
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Attention-getter: Nearly 40% of teen pregnancies end in abortion, and the main reason is becausee of a lack of good judgment or good timing.
B. Relate the topic to yourself (establish your credibility; this is ethos): An initiative was just put on the ballot concerning the issue of letting parents know about their young daughter's attempt to abort their child fetus. I voted for it because I put myself in the shoes of parents today. In the future, when I become a parent, I don't want my child to hide something as big as this procedure from me. Obviously, I want the best for my child, and many parents would appreciate if they at least knew that their daughter is planning an abortion. Please note that I am arguing for parental NOTIFICATION, rather than consent, because the two involve very different things.
C. Relate the topic to this audience (this is immediacy) Isn't it ridiculous that minors need a parent's signature to get a flu shot, but the parents don’t need to know if their daughter is planning an abortion? If you were a parent, wouldn’t YOU want to know what happens to your child outside of the house? Especially if it was a dangerous and invasive procedure?
D. State your main idea (this is the thesis statement, above): The excuses need to be put to rest, and the lives and futures of young women must be made a priority in our schools and abortion clinics. We must push for these clinics to at least notify the client's parents of the abortion if they are underage. We must push for accountability.
