This paper will point out the difference between raising children in the 2000’s and the 1990’s. Do you believe in spanking your children? Do you believe in putting your children on high meds such as Zoloft, Colexa, Paxil and Prozac? Well this paper will point out different issues we as parents are faced with in raising our children in today’s society.
First things first there has been a study on how many children are on meds. The study findings are below:
• 349,000 prescriptions of Prozac to children under 16
• 248,000 prescriptions of Zoloft to children under 16
• 226,000 prescriptions of Ritalin to children under 6
• 325,000 prescriptions of Lotrisone to children under 12
In studies I have also read on the side effects that kids will most likely have while on these meds and the scary thing about all this is a lot of the effects will occur in adult hood. “Antidepressants, designed for adults, may be altering the brains of kids who take them” Paul Raeburn. Kids who are on antidepressants are more likely to try harsher drugs such as heroine, speed, and worse as adults. I have read several horror stories about the effects of taking antidepressants and also happy ending stories. One of the success stories I have read was by a lady named Lily Thompson. Lily wrote “There were days when I couldn’t get out of bed I didn’t want to face the world” after talking with her doctor he prescribed her Prozac and with Prozac she was once again ready to face the world and enjoyed the mornings. On February 7, 2004, the body of Traci Johnson, a 19-year-old college student, was found hanging by a scarf from a shower rod in a drug company laboratory. Johnson had no apparent signs of depression, and the reason she killed herself was a mystery. What made her death different from other such tragedies is that she was a subject in a trial of an experimental antidepressant.
